Today Cassie said she thought East Beach Cafe was an 'eyesore' I know that's a view shared by a lot of people.  Equally, many (myself included) believe it's a fantastic piece of architecture and something Littlehampton should be proud to have.  Yes, the radical nature of the design divides opinion, but there's no question it draws people to the town and, in my opinion, should be seen as our Eiffel Tower, our Guggenheim, the building that symbolises Littlehampton and is used at the core of all its publicity.  And remember, both those buildings continue to divide opinion to this day.

Whether you like it or not, I don't think you can call it an 'eyesore'.  It's unquestionably very different, and it's definitely an unconventional building in so many ways.  But to me, that's a good thing, not a reason for dissing it.

It's also wonderfully photogenic.  I should know, I photograph it most weeks.  Now that the Long Bench shelters have been revealed and use a similar 'rusted' metal to that of East Beach Cafe, my own view is they will each make sense of each other and give our promenade a uniquely contemporary backdrop.  Let's wait a few weeks and see what it looks like when it's all finished and all the disjointed elements are connected.

in the meantime, as proof that we have one of the country's best buildings on our doorstep, check out Images of East Beach Cafe at http://bit.ly/bKwsDu - it might just change your mind!

I'm afraid I agree with Cassie.
Don't like the building itself, but also find it uncomfortable inside too.  It's clearly a popular place to eat, but not somewhere I'd choose to go.

I like the building. On another day in Littlehampton, someone would have approved some tin shack selling rubbery burgers and Mr Whippys.

An ambitious plan was set forward, approved, built, done. In the future Littlehampton will have to follow this model because I tell you this town currently has a 'that'll do' mentality.

I like it. It is a bit expensive, although if they allowed you to buy a beer (without paying £9.50 for a plate of sardines), it would be much better.

I wouldn't really enjoy a meal in there myself, but the owner clearly has a strong enough customer base. For me the East Beach is purely an architectural triumph and something that beat the red tape that will stop I'm sure a couple of the big developments planned (North Littlehampton, St Martins Car Park, Arun West Bank etc)

I know we have to live here, and, if at the beach, look at it all year round, but we're essentially a tourist town. Those kind of radical designs are tailor made for the one-day novelty factor of visitors to the town, and if you do live here, by now you're so used to it that it doesn't even register as being weird.

Yep...I am always slightly bemused when people refer to it as 'the turd on the beach' etc. I love it - hardly an 'eyesore'.

I've eaten there a few times, and the food is reasonably priced for type of establishment it is. If you want to pay less, there's plenty of other places to eat it Littlehampton but none of them are in such a stunning location. I also like the fact that it feels like you're eating in a cave looking out to sea.

Along the same lines as Stuart this is pretty much a novelty for tourists who don't mind spending that little bit of extra cash while they are visiting for the day.
As for Gary's photos, excellent they may be i feel you are trying to polish a turd and we all know that's impossible.

Well I love the East Beach Cafe - I think it looks good and, as a restaurant, it is very good. I eat there about once a month and always take visiting friends there. This week Dame Maggie Smith and the chap from Frasier were on the next table Grin

I am pleased that it is there.
