so I have loved walking my dog and going swimming with her down on west beach so far this summer. A few fellow dog walkers and i went down on saturday afternoon and had a wonderful time. the dogs were off the lead and caused no problems to anyone at all. Infact pretty much the only people on the section of beach we were on (just past the dunes) were other dog walkers.

Having such a wonderful natural beach for dog walkers is fantastic, there are lots of dog walkers who look for places to holiday that will allow a dog on the beach (I know I am one of them). I understand that as Littlehampton has two beaches it makes sense for East beach to be dog free in the summer (although it is a shame when the beach is totally empty and i have to walk past it with her on the lead). I don't know any dog walkers who don't pick up after their dogs (although I know there is at least one member who feels this is a problem) and have a far bigger issue with groups and families who just leave all of their litter on the beach!!!!

I am lead to believe that there is a proposal to bad dogs from that beach too... i think it would be a massive mistake, families go to east beach, dog walkers go to west beach... it is pretty much empty other than that - especially as the visitor centre is sooo rubbish too!

I also hear people complain about the nudists... well although I did see some nudists there were on the whole very discrete and i like the fact that it is so natural and relaxed over there. they are not causing anyone any harm and it is a perfect quiet beach for such activity.. most nudists are educated, middle class, elderly and fairly wealthy - they are hardly a menace or threat!!!!! I don't go nude but I certainly am not offended by it... and again... if you don't like it don't look or go to the very family friendly east beach!!!!!!!!

I for one moan about dog mess but only when i happen to collect some on my shoe, i have no problem with dogs or the owners but unfortunately there are a few walkers who don't clear up the mess. having said that why on earth should dog owners be banished from the rest of society on west beach, if you are a responsible dog owner then why should you not be able to mix with the rest of the daytrippers...
The point made by Fliss about families leaving their mess i totally agree with but i can't see the local council suddenly banning them from the beach, perhaps the council should employ some unifomed people to on the spot fines for litter louts during the summer season, maybe if there were a deterrent then people may think twice about leaving such a mess behind.

The East Beach dog rule seems pretty relaxed anyway. I think it's supposed to be no dogs until Rustington end, but once you get past the cafe, that seems to be the unofficial cut-off for people letting them run about in the sea and on the sand. I'm down there all the time during peak beach hours, and that's definitely the doggy-friendly area. In fact, I'll deliberately take a book/my lunch down there so I can watch the dogs playing in the sea.

What about Seagull poo? I swear they target my car on purpose!

In fact, why not ban dogs, horses, families & seagulls and the beach will be lovely & clean. Apart from all the drift & seaweed that is  Wink

stuart... you are right.. in fact I am quite often down there playing with my dog too.. it's cool as we can walk along the river.. through the park that runs along the beach then come onto the beach just after the cafe for a good old run around and splash.

Andrew and Mr Hanky... what about all of the sand and pebbles... they make quite a mess too you know! he he  Wink
